DARE Active

DARE Active is a flexible secondary/community programme which teaches young people the skills to face life’s challenges in a positive way and to achieve their full potential.

With a focus on achievement and aspiration, together with responsibility, the programme will encourage young people to discover the best in themselves and to understand the benefits of planning ahead in order to accomplish what they want in life.

Strategy

Working both in groups and individually young people will use a range of methods, learning how to set SMART goals and utilise step by step planning to achieve their objectives.

Concepts

Young people face a number of unique challenges which can be difficult to overcome – peer pressure, exam pressures, moving from school into work, as well as different and increasing expectations being placed upon them by family, community and society.

Results

Young people who are well balanced, can behave in a responsible way and make positive decisions will mature into adults who have a positive view of themselves and make better contributions to their communities.

The Six Keys to Success

An integral part of the DARE Active Programme, the 6 keys include: Mental toughness, Hunger to achieve, People skills, Life knowledge, Breaking barriers, Planning for success.

THE CONCEPT OF THE ‘SIX KEYS TO SUCCESS’ IS BASED ON THE TRAINING PROGRAMMES UNDERTAKEN BY PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES AT MAJOR SPORTING EVENTS SUCH AS THE LONDON OLYMPICS IN 2012. THE USE OF THESE SIX STEPS CAN BE APPLIED TO MANY AREAS IN LIFE WHERE YOUNG PEOPLE ARE WORKING TO FURTHER DEVELOP THEIR KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE. FOR EXAMPLE KEY 4 – SPORTS AND LIFE KNOWLEDGE – IF YOU ARE UNAWARE OF THE RULES OR DON’T UNDERSTAND HOW SOMETHING WORKS, IT IS MUCH MORE DIFFICULT TO PLAY THE GAME OR COMPLETE THE TASK!

Delivery

The DARE Active programme is a five session course, plus a team challenge, which is delivered by DARE Champions. DARE Champions are trained by Lifeskills staff to be able to deliver the full course.

Focus

The work includes examining issues around drugs, the risks and consequences of using drugs and the harm that this can cause. Use of our D.A.R.E. Decision Making Model encourages young people make positive decisions when faced with life’s challenges.

Challenge

The beginning of the course sees the introduction of a Team Active Challenge – young people are encouraged to identify an activity which they will work on as a group throughout the course, alongside the five structured sessions.

Project

A project which involves research around drugs issues and a presentation of their findings at the end of the programme. Later in the course a further opportunity for working together on a challenge for the benefit of others, is offered.

Suitable for any community group

Life Skills

Throughout the sessions young people will also complete exercises which aim to improve their communication skills, manage personal stress, learn how to assess key areas of their own development, set personal targets for improvement and work together as a team.

Goal Setting

Goal setting and action planning is used in order to enable young people to focus and plan for a successful future. Using the ‘six keys to success’ participants will develop an understanding of crucial attributes required for success in life, and how these can be transferred into everyday situations.
